Sell your gold

Recently, there has been a massive increase in companies willing to send you cash for your old gold jewellery, encouraging you to sell your gold, sell your gold jewellery or even to sell gold coins. Ebay and even pawn brokers offer good alternatives, but what do you do with those bits of gold that you can't sell? - broken necklaces, single earrings, earrings without backs, broken watches - the list is endless. Now there are a wealth of simple to use agencies who will simply weigh in and melt down anything you can send them.

A simple google search will give you dozens of companies to choose from, and they all work in a very similar way:

1) Send for your free postage bag by either filling in an online form, ringing or texting the company.

2) Put as much of your gold, whatever the carat, into the postage paid bag and send it in along with your details.

3) The company value the items you have sent - firstly checking the carat, and then weighing it.

4) They will send you a cheque for the value they have calculated

5) You either bank the cheque, or return it. If you choose not to accept the money, they will send everything back to you.

What should you watch out for

Having spoken to a few people who have used this service, everything does seem to work smoothly, but you should select the service you want to use carefully. Some of the websites have a simple calculator online, which tells you immediately what you can expect to receive for the weight of gold you have. Use this as a guide, as you will find some variation in the amounts offered. When researching this topic for you, we found one site offering £43.20 for 6grams of 9ct gold, and another offering £37.20! 6 grams is one ring - so the difference is quite substantial if you send in 4 or 5 rings.

Always ensure that the service uses a postal system where you can track your parcel, and where the contents are insured if lost. Most that we found do, but you do need to check.

Make sure that you are using a service that is completely free of charge. Including whether you get your gold back by free postage if you change your mind.

Make sure that the company you use has contact details on their website. This should include an email address and a telephone number (at the very least)

Be aware that there is no payment for stones - just the precious metal, so if you send in a sapphire ring, for example, you will still only receive cash for the weight of the gold. Therefore, we would advise you to take any precious stones out of the jewellery before you send it - you could always have them set into another piece of jewellery in the future - or better still - sell them on ebay.

Sell Gold Coins

Many of the companies w ehave talked about will also trade in gold coins for cash. If you have kept your coins in good order, it will probably be more beneficial for you to try and sell to a collector. If the coins are included in a broken sovereign ring or chain, then this method may work, but be aware that you will only get the same price per gram as all other gold. There would be no extra for the collectable value of your coin.

Finally.....

Most of these companies also cash in your old platinum jewellery as well - so if your lucky enough to have any broken platinum lying around - the same advice and system would apply.
