Have you considered getting rid of any unwanted items and actually make some money doing it, well, why not do a spring clean, no matter what time of year it is and also clear all your clutter at the same time.
Having a clear out is always a good thing, and we usually feel much better for it too. Often unwanted items are donated to charity, which we would not advise against, but in these cash strapped times it could actually be better to sell them and then still make a donation to your chosen charity instead. That way you may find yourself with a bit of extra money and also still be able to help others by making your charity donation. Earning extra money might also inspire you into action, more than if you were just to give the items away.
How can you Make Money from Unwanted Items?
Where would you sell the items you no longer need? Well, you could choose to buy a pitch at a Car Boot Sale, or if early mornings are really not your thing then you could choose auction sites such as Ebay instead.
Selling on Ebay
To enable you to sell on Ebay you will need to register an account, the basic account you are given when you register just enables you to make purchases but once you have this account you can then request to have a sellers account as well.
What you need to do is when you are logged into your ebay account, click on the "Sell" tab which usually appears on the top right hand side of most Ebay pages.
Then you need to click onto the Start Selling Tab.
Ebay then takes you through the steps needed to become a seller and this includes how to advertise your item and also asks you to confirm how you will be paying your Ebay selling fees.
Advertising your Item on Ebay
With regards as to how you advertise your item, it is a good idea to take a look at similar items on Ebay by putting your items description into the advance search box. Once you find a similar item you can make a note of how it is described, which section it appears and how much it is selling for. Or you can make selling really easy by clicking the "sell one like this" tab. This creates your listing in that category and you will probably find that this is the easiest and quickest way of creating your advert.
When you set up your advert you need to be aware of the following:-
1) Do you want to have a reserve set for the item
2) Where are you willing to sell and post to ie: UK or International
3) How much will the postage be (make sure you check this as otherwise you could end up out of pocket)
4) Do you want a standard listing or would you like to highlight your item
5) How long do you want the auction for your item to last
6) Have you prepared your pictures
7) Have you checked your advert and is it an honest, true reflection of the item
As long as you have all this information to hand then you should be ready to create your item.
Ebay Sellers Fees
It may be that you don't expect to get a great amount for your item and so want to keep your sellers fees to a minimum, in which case you need to be really consider the fees and choose wisely:-
Private Sellers
| Starting or Reserve Price | Insertion Fee (Private Seller) | Insertion Fee (Business Seller) |
|---|---|---|
| £0.01 to £0.99 | No Fee | £0.10 |
| £1.00 to £4.99 | £0.15 | £0.15 |
| £5.00 to £14.99 | £0.25 | |
| £15.00 to £29.99 | £0.50 | £0.50 |
| £30.00 - £99.99 | £1.00 | £1.00 |
| £100 or more | £1.30 to £1.90 | |
| £100 or more multiple listings | £1.90 to £1.90 |
And for the advertisement itself a few examples of the adverts style you can choose are:-
| Feature | Short Duration 3,5,7,10 days, Auction and Buy it now | 30 days Buy it now only |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery Listings | Free | Free |
| Gallery Plus | £0.95 | £2.85 |
| Highlight | £2.50 | £750 |
You can find out more about what each style includes by going to Ebay.
And last of all you will be charged a Final Selling Fee of 10% of the selling price. This does not include postage amount and is also capped at £40, so if you sell an item at over £400 you would still only be charged a £40 final selling fee.
So basically, if you are looking to sell some items which are no longer needed and you don't want any particular highlights on your advertisement, nor do you want to set a reserve you would be looking at the following:-
* No reserve = £0.00
* Gallery List = £0.00
* Sale for £7.00 (not including postage)
* Final Selling Fee = £0.70
* Total profit = £6.30
Paying Ebay Fees
When you have sold an item on Ebay, you need to go to your "My Ebay" account and click onto the Seller Account tab and see what fees are outstanding and can also pay your fees from here too.
You can choose your method of payment from one of the following:-
* Paypal
* Credit or Debit Card on file
* Direct Debit
* Cheque
* Postal Order
You must ensure that you do pay your fees (if they are over £1.00) each month in full as otherwise Ebay will suspend your account for non payment. If after you have received warnings and account payment reminders from Ebay you still fail to pay, they can transfer your account details to an outside collection agency to take further action against you.
Though, if you stick to the rules, set your prices at an amount which encourage bids, are prompt with postage and honest with your items description, then you should have very few problems. You can also make a pretty penny or two on items which you don't need and would have normally thrown out, or given away.
