Effective Time Management

How to be more effective in your job through time management

The issue of time management can be a tricky one. If you suffer from poor time management, how can you possibly have the time to look at the problem and come up with a solution?

Consider it this way - any time spent on thinking up the best way to manage your working day will be well worth it if it means you always get all of your allotted tasks done within the required amount of time every day.

Common methods of managing and allocating time to work duties include listing future appointments and need-to-do tasks in a diary or planner ahead of time and sitting down at the end of each day to come up with a list of the highest priority work to complete the next day.

However, both of these ways of managing time can fail from time to time when last minute problems and jobs crop up. Despite this, these methods can be a good place to start.

Once you've decided how best to organise your day-to-day work, it can be helpful to focus on identifying the things that waste the most time and cutting these out of your working day.

For example, unscheduled or impromptu meetings can take up a significant chunk of time, so unless it is something particularly important, it may be best to plan such meetings so that they take place at a set time when you know you will have the room in your day to accommodate them.

Interruptions and distractions such as phone calls, emails, questions from others and nearby conversations are also big culprits when it comes to wasted time, so come up with a way of dealing with these and stick to it, whether it is finishing the current task before allowing yourself to look at your email or finding a kind yet firm way of saying 'I'm busy, call/come back later'.

Once you've formulated a thorough time management strategy and stuck to it, you'll likely find yourself becoming more efficient at your work and better able to take on bigger projects and tasks that could result in a pay boost.
